Abstract | A 1984 study found that female elementary school principals spent 38.4 percent of their time on instructional leadership activities, while their male counterparts spent only 21.8 percent. A 1989 follow-up study found that women principals were more likely to be seen by their staffs as instructional leaders. A sidebar examines sex discrimination in West Virginia.
